NEWENT IN BLOOM

News update October 2007

Newent won the Gold Award in the Heart of England in Bloom competition 2007!

Organisers of Newent in Bloom are on Cloud Nine after getting gold at their second outing in the Heart of England competition. It won the award in the small town category against dozens of other entries from eight counties.

The judges also gave individual awards of merit for Newent's millennium arboretum and Glebe Primary School's new environmental wildlife area.

A jubilant Lyn Ashton from Newent in Bloom said: "We worked for it and deserved it. Now Newent is the flower town of the Forest." The gold was one up from the silver gilt awarded last year when Newent entered the contest for the first time.

This year, the judges remarked on how the town had taken up the challenging comments made in 2006 and incorporated them into this year's programme. They were impressed with how Newent had cleared up the mess of last July's flooding with the help of court offenders doing community work.

Newent was also been declared the winner of the South West Regional Development Agency's best market town's environment and culture award.
